In this section, you’ll find information about our plans for a new building on Thomas Street at the heart of the City Campus. You can learn more about the designs for the new building and ways you can have your say about the proposed development.

Project Overview

The Thomas Street Building is an integral part of the City Campus Master Plan – a vision to create an intellectually engaging and socially vibrant campus which supports the University’s vision to become a world leading university of technology.

The new building is part of the University’s broader renewal strategy to ensure it remains at the cutting edge of teaching, learning research and sustainability.

The development involves the construction of a part-four and part-six storey, above-ground building and three basement levels to service the UTS faculty of Science, and connect to the existing, adjacent UTS Science Building. Eventually, the buildings will be used as one, with key facilities being shared.

The design follows the street alignment of Thomas Street, with active uses and entry points to its frontage and to the corner of Jones and Thomas Streets. The building will accommodate research offices and laboratories, teaching space and faculty space, including a connection through to Alumni Green.

We look forward to sharing our vision for this building with you and to hearing your feedback about the project.

Project Timeline

An Environmental Assessment Report for the UTS Thomas Street Building was submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure in mid December  2011. Following this initial review, the application will be placed on public exhibition for 30 days from 15 February to 19 March.

UTS encourages you to review the plans and make a formal submission to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure. This can be done through the Department’s website at

Excavation works on the site (approved in July 2011) are scheduled to begin in February 2012. Subject to approval, the main construction works should take approximately 24 months to complete. The new facility is expected to be open during the 2014 academic year.
